Hyena v11.7 Now Available
Hyena v11.7 has been released, and is now available in 32 and 64-bit for English, German, French, and Spanish Editions.
New features in Hyena v11.7 include:
Updated Active Directory Query Manager
The Active Directory Query Manager in Hyena has been extensively modified with a new GUI, and many new features to make even complex Active Directory tasks easier to manage. New features include:
- Modified Layout - The new layout makes better use of screen space and allows resizing for viewing more information.
- Sub-Menu Support - Up to three (3) levels of sub-menus can now be created, allows for better management of large query sets.
- Menu Level Options - Queries can now be placed directly on the main context menu for easier and faster access to the most common queries you select.
- Import and Export - Easily export queries to your co-workers and import queries created by others.
- Query Library - A new library of dozens of directory queries can now be accessed and used as templates and examples. See below for more information.
Active Directory Query Library
Hyena's new 'Active Directory Query Library' contains dozens of pre-defined Active Directory queries that can be imported into the current directory query list, and further customized as needed. Many of the queries in the Library can be used to learn about the options and features of Hyena's query parameters, LDAP filtering, automatic date offsets, and more.

Hyena Meets Windows 10 Compatibility Requirements
Hyena has passed the Microsoft Windows 10 testing requirements for compatibility with 64-bit and 32-bit Windows 10. To earn the "Windows 10 Compatible" logo, apps and devices must pass Microsoft-designed installation, performance, reliability and security tests so you can be sure these products are compatible with Windows 10. Hyena v11.7 has been tested and meets all of the technical requirements to be "Windows 10 Compatible".
Important Windows 10 and NetApp Bug Information
Windows 10: Two issues that we have been working on lately concern a Windows 10 bug and a new problem with NetApp filters.
A few months ago we reported a problem to Microsoft related to a Windows 10 issue that some customers encountered. The problem involves any application that is run under Windows 10 with a different user account than the current logged on account (ie Run As, Run As Different User, etc.). If an attempt is made to then access the Windows Explorer context menu, typically to get access to the 'Properties' option for viewing a file or folder's properties or security settings, an error will be displayed (or nothing at all). Hyena makes extensive use of the Explorer context menu for all file and folder management tasks. The Properties for a file or folder is also where NTFS security information is managed. This becomes problematic if Hyena is used under a different admin account than the current logged in account.
This same problem can also be duplicated in any tool that accesses the Windows Explorer context menu such as Explorer replacement tools, and some FTP programs. This Windows 10 bug can also be duplicated using plain Windows Notepad as well: Log on with a standard user account, then shift-right click on the Notepad shortcut and select Run As Different User. Enter the credentials of an admin account, then in Notepad, select File > Save As, navigate to any folder, right click, and select 'Properties' from the menu. This will display the same error seen in Hyena.
Last week, Microsoft provided a patch for us to test and verify that the problem had been resolved. The bad news is that Microsoft indicated that it might be several months until a formal patch for Windows 10 is released. It is unfortunate that a bug like this that effects mostly 3rd party applications is not resolved faster. Since Microsoft is now pushing Windows 10 as a standard Windows update, we wanted to let customers know about this problem if your usage of Hyena would trigger this Windows bug.
NetApp: Another issue that we want to alert all customers about involves NetApp filers, and in particular, those running in C-Mode that have been recently upgraded to a newer version of OnTap. The issue is that any modification to the share security (SHARE, not NTFS), will result in either 'No Access' to all trustees, or if using the latest patch of OnTap, anyone with 'Read' access will be granted 'Full Control'.
We are recommending that any customer using a NetApp filer, regardless of the mode or OnTap version, perform an audit of all share permissions. The easiest way to do this is to right click on the Shares object on the server, and select 'View all Access Rights'. This will display all share permissions for all shared objects.
NetApp was made aware of this problem, and it will probably be fixed in a future patch to OnTap. But due to the nature of the problem and possible security issues involved, we put in place our own patch in Hyena v11.7 (Rev 'B') to workaround this issue. Since Windows clients are not impacted by this issue, our workaround involves detecting that a NetApp filer is being used on a given share, and then modifying the way the permissions are set. In this way, shares on a Windows client are still handled conventionally.
For customers with NetApp support, the internal bug ID is #928340.
