HyenaHyena 10.0 'F' available

We've made a few additional corrections to Hyena; the current release is rev 'F'. Since the initial release, a complete revision history is below. All customers are encouraged to upgrade to at least rev 'C'. If using account expiration dates after 2037, then upgrade to the latest version.

  • Rev 'F' - Corrected two problems concerning account expiration dates when the year is 2038 or later. Accounts with these dates would not sort correctly in the right window and if the dates were set in Hyena, they would appear to be early in the 20th century when viewed in ADU&C. Users would also be unable to use the accounts as well.
  • Rev 'F' - Fixed an issue where if the built-in Object Picker were used to add (for example) a group to a user account, then displayed a second time and cancelled, the first or earlier groups that were added to the account would not be saved.
  • Rev 'E' - Fixed a sorting issue in the right list window for the account expiration date.
  • Rev 'D' - Fixed the display in the right list window of account expiration dates set after daylight savings time.
  • Rev 'C' - Corrected a bug when modifying the account expiration date for multiple users. To clear the account expiration date for multiple users, enter ~DEL for the YEAR, and remove the month and day portion.
  • Rev 'B' - Updated Exporter Pro to v2.7.

For a complete list of changes since the initial Hyena v10.0 release, see the Whats New section in Hyena's help file after downloading and installing the rev 'F' update.

Hyena v10.0 Rev 'F' is available for immediate download in both x86 and x64 in English, French, German, and Spanish. This update can be downloaded from Hyena's main download page.

Hyena 10.5 coming soon

Work is nearly complete on Hyena v10.5! Among the new features are significant improvements to the Active Editor introduced in v10.0, including added support for multi-valued attributes and multi-object selection and modification.

But one feature in the upcoming release, which we call the 'Group Member Matrix', provides for a new way to view the members of any number of groups and users. Consider the simple example below:

Directory Name Group_A Group_B Group_C
Julie Smith Direct Direct
Daniel Johnson Direct Primary
Craig Williamson     Direct

The new Group Member Matrix view will be able to show primary, direct, and even indirect group members in a simple to understand grid. No more exporting a list of users and groups and trying to match them up in Excel or Access. Just select the groups, set the options, and then visually see which users (or other groups) are members of each group. Each group gets its own column; each member its own row. You decide which groups to include in the matrix view, along with what membership types to show and even what words or characters to show for member/non-member status. And of course, this view can be exported to Excel in a couple of mouse clicks.

We anticipate Hyena v10.5 to be available in December. Following that release, we further anticipate Hyena v11.0 to be available in early 2014, with a significant addition to Hyena's Active Directory importing and bulk modification capabilities. The next two updates to Hyena are ones that we want every user to take full advantage of.

See the 'Hyena Maintenance' section below to see how to verify your software's maintenance expiration date to ensure you are able to upgrade to new versions for free. There are only a few weeks until the v10.5 release: don't miss out !

Stay in the loop on updates

With all of the upcoming updates to Hyena, we sometimes have a difficult time sending this newsletter to all subscribers in a timely manner. Email is great for some communications, but not so great for others. We are turning to using Twitter and Facebook for sending immediate notices when patches are made available and other late-breaking news. For example, if we make a special beta version available for Hyena v10.5, we will announce this on Twitter and Facebook. Be the first to know !

Working with Hyena's server listing

For many years Hyena has had to rely on the Windows Browse List to populate the Servers folder due to lack of an efficient mechanism for retrieving a list of servers from AD. As environments started locking down network broadcasts, along with newer OSes having the Computer Browser service disabled by default, SystemTools has seen an increase in questions about the Servers folder.

This tip offers a different solution for this issue, and that is to create a query that filters for *server* in the OS field. The first step is to create the query:

  • Select File > Manage Object View > AD Queries
  • Change the Query Type to "Container/OU Contents"
  • Click the "New Query" icon on the right.
  • For the "Query Name" type "Servers" or another name of your choice, then check the box at the bottom to "Include subcontainers and sub-OUs in search".
  • In the "LDAP Search Filter" box type the following:

  • Click OK to create the query and return to the Object Manager Configuration dialog and choose the attributes to display for this query. A simple example would include:

Directory Name
Service Pack

  • Click OK to save the new query and close Object Manager.

To run this query, expand the domain in Hyena's left window, then right-click on the main Containers/OUs object and choose Query Active Directory > Servers.

The SystemTools site has more information on this issue along with several other options:

Using special Active Directory symbols

While Active Directory contains a great deal of information, at times the data is not formatted in such a way that makes it easy to use. For example, the directory does not have an attribute to indicate the name of the container that an object resides in. While this information is part of the directory path of the object, it is not easy parsed out or visually easy to see.

Hyena supports a number of special 'symbols' that can be added to AD queries which will be calculated or programmatically determined when the query is executed. To add a symbol to a query, set the Attribute Category to 'Special AD Symbols'. See the above tip for creating a new OU query; the technique is similar if you want to create a new All Users query or just modify one of the existing directory queries.

Some of these symbols can affect the performance of getting back the query results. The following special symbols can be added to a query, but before adding any of these symbols to an AD query, read the information below for specific performance impacts:

When this symbol is added to a query, Hyena will call a Windows function to retrieve additional information to determine the status of the 'user cannot change password' setting. This function must be called on each user account, and can therefore increase the time required to process the AD query. Test using this function first on a small subset of users accounts. Its usage should only be needed if the AD user account flags (useraccountcontrol / role attribute) is not accurate with respect to this particular setting.

If this symbol is added to a query, and the user icon rule (Tools >Settings >Active Directory (User Icons...) for 'user cannot change password' is enabled, the user icon will reflect the same data retrieved for this symbol. See the Active Directory > Customized User Images topic in Hyena's help file for more information.

Performance: Potentially a significant performance impact when added to a query. Best added to queries that are NOT run by default.

Calculates the AD container path, which is essentially the DN without the leading name (CN) of the object. For example, if the entire user DN is:

CN=JackieJohnson,OU=Sales,OU=Marketing,DC=mydomain,DC=com, then the AD container will be: OU=Sales,OU=Marketing,DC=mydomain,DC=com

Performance: No performance impact when added to a query.

Using the above example, this symbol value would be:

Performance: No performance impact when added to a query.

Using the previous example, this symbol value would be:

Performance: No performance impact when added to a query.

Displays the number of days left until the account expires, based on the account expiration date.

Performance: Small performance impact, as the account expiration date must be retrieved/computed.

Displays the number of days since the password was changed.

Performance: Small performance impact, as the 'pwdlastset' attribute must be retrieved/computed.

.Hyena Maintenance

All Hyena licenses have a built-in maintenance expiration date, which can be displayed under the Tools > Settings > Licensing dialog. The maintenance expiration date determines whether new releases can be installed with the active license. If your maintenance has recently expired or is about to expire, it can be renewed now. For maintenance information and renewal options, visit:

If you prefer to get an email quotation on maintenance renewal, send your current license information to and request a maintenance renewal quote. You can easily get the current license information under Hyena's Tools > Settings > Licensing dialog.

If your maintenance expiration date is before June 1, 2013, the upgrade cost is only 50% of the licensing cost, which includes one year of maintenance. Maintenance expirations on or after June 1, 2013 can be renewed now.
